The pest control industry is at a digital crossroads. Whether it’s through search, social or maps, 98% of consumers use the internet to discover and evaluate local businesses.1 Not only does this represent a fundamental shift in how people are choosing pest control services, it also emphasizes the need for strong digital marketing.

In 2026, pest management professionals face both unprecedented challenges and remarkable opportunities. The question isn’t whether to embrace digital marketing but how to do it effectively without overwhelming your team or budget.

THE AI REVOLUTION. Your potential customers are finding information in entirely new ways, and if you’re not adapting your marketing strategy, you could miss opportunities.

From Gen Z to Baby Boomers, people are now using AI as part of everyday life — to write emails, create lists and do quick research. It’s shaping the way consumers search, learn and even buy. OpenAI reported that it’s leveraged most for practical guidance, such as how-to instructions and creative ideation. While Gen Z has really taken to it, we’re also seeing almost half of Baby Boomers utilizing this new technology.2 Whether it’s to ask about the best pest control company nearby or how to prevent ant infestations at home, AI will have the answer and will deliver it with confidence.

Despite the variety of use cases, it all comes down to one factor: trust. AI has become a mentor, a tutor, a therapist, an assistant and more to its users. For pest control companies, it’s all about how to effectively use these digital tools to become part of the conversation.

ZERO-CLICK SEARCHES EXPLAINED. Simply put: people are spending less time on websites. With “zero-click searches,” information is more accessible than ever. How many times have you, as a consumer, asked Google a question and referenced the answer at the top of the results page? That’s known as an AI Overview (AIO); it has reduced traffic to company websites overall by 15-25%.3 People aren’t visiting websites as frequently when the information they need is at their fingertips.

That can fundamentally change your marketing strategy. Zero-click results are transforming the way people use search engines — it’s not just about being clicked anymore, it’s about being mentioned. If AI is delivering answers without sending people to your website, you need to make sure the technology knows about your company and mentions you when answering pest control questions.

MAKE SURE AI KNOWS YOUR NAME. Keeping AI top of mind when building content is necessary for brand visibility. Top ways pest control companies can show up in AI responses are through company overviews, reputation and public perception, and local search prompts.

You may be familiar with Search Engine Optimization (SEO), otherwise known as how your company ranks in traditional search results on Google or Yahoo. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is focused on how companies are cited and referenced in AI responses, which can be strategically reflected in how content is framed. Whether it’s building authority through earned media, sharing expertise on popular platforms or being featured in “Best Of” lists, these are all great ways to see success with GEO.

Additionally, the language throughout your brand’s social posts and digital marketing collateral should reflect the way consumers speak to AI, which for half of users’ messages is a question.4 From “How do I…?” to “Who’s best for…?” it’s important your content follows this format. Position it to sound like an answer to these questions and AI will be more likely to use you as a source.

We often see third-party placements like Reddit, Nextdoor, Quora and Glassdoor in AI responses as these are the platforms where people are answering questions so naturally, they’re being scanned the most. It’s essential for businesses to engage with online rhetoric and encourage positive reviews from customers as that’s what people will likely see first. Elevating your online presence will ensure your name is front and center.

This is all hugely important because by 2028, half of traditional search traffic will shift to AI-powered search.5 Companies that optimize for this reality now will capture customers while competitors wonder where their leads went.

UPGRADE YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE. Here are some tips to help you boost your online presence:

  1. Claim your Google Business Profile at Google.com/business. Complete profiles get 7x more clicks.
  2. Check out your website on your phone. Google prioritizes mobile first indexing and 62% of searches happen on mobile devices6, so it’s key to make sure your site is optimized accordingly.
  3. Add high-intent service pages. Having individual pages for each service not only makes navigation easier, but it creates better SEO and higher conversion rates. If you provide services for termite control, rodent removal, bed bug treatment and commercial buildings, create separate pages for each.
  4. Keep content fresh. Outdated material won’t get you mentioned. When developing content through the AI lens, keep it simple and easy to understand (e.g., bulleted lists, concise language and minimal jargon).

SOCIAL IS HERE TO STAY. AI may feel like a whole new world, but social has been around for quite some time, and it’s not going anywhere. Ninety-seven percent of adults visit at least one social platform per month.7 These platforms have evolved beyond entertainment — they’ve become primary search tools where consumers seek inspiration and answers to everyday questions, including pest control advice.

Much of social media’s popularity can be attributed to its authentic creators. Today’s consumers aren’t looking for polished perfection online — they want and reward realness. Showing technicians on site, customer stories or the true behind-the-scenes of pest control are all great ways to build valuable connections with followers and potential customers. It highlights the people behind the brand and that’s what consumers want to see.

UPGRADE YOUR SOCIAL PRESENCE. Standing out on social is not difficult, but it does take some strategic thinking and actions, including:

Posting consistently. Batch create content and schedule ahead with tools like Meta Business Suite. For Facebook and Instagram, aim to post 2-4 times per week and 1-2 times for LinkedIn.

Using platform-native features. Platforms reward content created within their app. LinkedIn articles are great for B2B pest control and Instagram carousels serve as an effective way to feature multiple visuals at once (and pro tip: these are favored by the algorithm). Use this option to show consumers all the pests to look out for each season.

Being a neighbor, not just a provider. Respond to comments, join community Facebook groups and tag local businesses. Social is an easy way to interact with your community and show them that you’re a reliable provider in the area.

Tapping into short-form videos. YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikToks deliver high engagement and help build credibility. Highlight what a technician’s day looks like or share quick pest control tips. For a foolproof routine, try posting three Reels that focus on tips, myth busting and a job site story. Utilize AI as a starting point to generate ideas or draft copy, then refine it with your own unique touch.

Being authentic. People appreciate authentic storytelling. Show real team members, film with phones and share customer stories. Let homeowners get to know you and see who you really are.

EARLY ADOPTION IS KEY. The digital landscape will continue evolving rapidly. AI video generation, predictive analytics for seasonal pest trends and voice AI that sounds completely human are all here for those who lean in. These tools will become affordable, just as ChatGPT did, and early adopters will gain competitive advantage.

The businesses that win in 2026 are the ones that start adapting today. Dedicate 30 minutes per week to testing new tools and strategies. Focus on learning AI fundamentals now. Build your digital foundation one brick at a time.

The next wave of digital marketing isn’t coming. It’s already here. Will you’ll ride it or watch from the shore?
