Credit: Black Ownership Matters
On June 19, the Black Ownership Matters (BOM) organization held an anniversary meeting to commemorate five years of serving the pest control industry by providing financial guidance, business resources, employee development, mentorship and community support.
BOM members were able to attend a masterclass on government contracting, and the process of how to bid for state and government contracts. During the meeting, Apex Accelerators was introduced as a resource for setting up GSA contracts and the necessity of having a SAMS.gov account and a CAGE number.
The meeting outlined several bidding platforms, such as BidMatch, BidNet and Bonfire, explaining their costs and benefits. Members also shared their experience with winning multiple bids, emphasizing the potential for significant earnings in local and state contracts.
BOM President Joe Campbell welcomed participants and shared his journey into the organization and emphasized the importance of mentorship for black-owned businesses. He proposed revamping the mentorship program to strengthen connections between mentors and mentees.
Wayne Golden explained how minority contractors are essential for securing government contracts, noting that large companies often need to partner with them to meet requirements. BOM members reinforced this by mentioning that minority certifications can facilitate subcontracting opportunities, allowing smaller firms to participate in larger projects.
