Will Cockroaches Eat Contaminated Baits?

For years, contaminated baits were thought to reduce feeding and contribute to bait failure. Researchers from the University of Kentucky put those theories to the test.

Cockroach baits have consistently been shown to be one of the best available resources for eliminating German cockroach infestations. However, there has always been a caveat for using baits: don’t contaminate them.

It has been theorized that bait efficacy drops considerably after contamination with other insecticides, or even with household cleaning products. This can complicate Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, as it has become common and expected practice to utilize more than one control tool to effectively manage infestations. For example, a German cockroach control program could be developed that involves both heavy sanitation and baiting, meaning cleaning products and baits could be used together in close proximity. As such, it may be more difficult to implement this kind of program if there are considerable fears about cleaning products causing baits to lose efficacy or even fail.

Additionally, these beliefs go hand in hand with the belief in pyrethroid repellency — the idea that German cockroaches (or any insect for that matter) are strongly repelled by pyrethroids and will avoid walking on pyrethroid-treated surfaces. However, recently, it was determined that German cockroaches will not avoid walking over pyrethroid-treated surfaces (see “German Cockroach Control Mythbusting,” PCT magazine, July 2024). These findings have opened the door for another question: Will cockroaches eat contaminated baits?

SEEKING ANSWERS. Looking over the literature, few answers are available. While work on bait contamination has been done before, early studies primarily focused on highly repellent compounds (e.g., mint oil), demonstrating that contaminated baits are both less effective and less consumed. However, a comprehensive assessment of bait contamination with a focus on products that may frequently come into contact with them had not been completed. Therefore, we decided to assess this behavior using consumer and professional grade residual insecticide sprays, flushing agents and cleaning products (surface cleaners and bleach). Specifically, we sprayed each potential contaminant onto two different gel baits following the label instructions, then exposed German cockroaches to contaminated baits in assays with an alternative food source. We then evaluated German cockroaches for the amount of bait consumed and the number of cockroaches that were killed.

OUR FINDINGS. Our research revealed that German cockroaches will eat contaminated baits. With a few exceptions, consumption of contaminated baits was not significantly different than consumption of uncontaminated baits. Furthermore, cockroaches were still readily killed by contaminated baits, indicating there was no loss in efficacy. However, there were a few products that caused a reduction in both efficacy and consumption. The well-known repellent, DEET, effectively eliminated bait consumption, resulting in little to no mortality, reaffirming prior research. We also found the pyrethroid flushing agent significantly reduced consumption in some baits, which was expected, as it is a product specifically designed to get cockroaches to flee an area. The only insecticidal product that reduced efficacy and consumption contained essential oil active ingredients, which are known to be repellent to cockroaches.

This work clearly demonstrates that bait contamination should not be blamed as the sole cause of bait failure. Rather, when baits fail, pest management professionals (PMPs) should consider other possible causes, including improper bait placement, not applying enough bait or insecticide resistance. Furthermore, given the failure of common cleaning products to reduce bait consumption or efficacy, PMPs and residents can now confidently clean before and after the use of baits. That said, under no circumstances do we advocate for the intentional contamination of baits. While it is unlikely that contamination would be the primary cause of bait failure, compounding effects of reduction in consumption and additional competing food sources would likely reduce efficacy against a large in-home cockroach infestation.
