From the editor: Brainstorming and brands

Some time away from the daily grind can be necessary to develop fresh ideas, says Editor Matt McClellan.

Editor's Note: This article originally appeared in the June 2026 print edition of Nursery Management under the headline “Brainstorming and brands.”

This week, the Nursery Management team was all in one zip code for our annual strategic planning meeting. It’s always wonderful to be in the same room with Kelli Rodda and Katie McDaniel, representing Texas and Tennessee, respectively.

It was a two-day event, with plenty of discussion with editorial, sales, graphics, audience development and marketing, as well as our colleagues from Greenhouse ManagementGarden Center and Produce Grower, collectively known as the GIE Media Horticulture Group. You’ll be seeing more content soon with this lovely logo that represents all of us — the people behind your favorite trade publications.

With our magazines, we cover the entire horticultural supply chain. We’ve got some sizzling new ideas and we're feeling invigorated for summer trade show season. Of course, we love to hear from our readers, too. So if you have ideas for articles, videos, podcasts or in-person events, please tell me about them.

The next time we all get together will be for Cultivate, AmericanHort’s giant trade show, which takes place next month in Columbus, Ohio.

We preview two interesting sessions in this month’s issue and another in the Get to Know department. We couldn’t fit them all in this issue, so for more session previews, visit our website.

From their new plant introductions to their research into consumer behavior to their iconic green pots, Monrovia Nursery Company is a legend in the business. But despite the status they’ve earned over 100 years, they still deal with the same problems other nurseries do. Find out how they keep three very different nurseries working toward the same goal in our cover story. I can’t help but compare the united front they’ve created to how our different magazines strengthen the GIE Media Horticulture Group.

Jay and Patty Steinhauser of Stonehouse Nursery are tremendous people. I’ve enjoyed talking with them at the Nursery Management Conference over the years and I wish them, and new owner Amy Ryan, nothing but the best. Read the story of their successful succession.

Speaking of our conference, is the time right for us to bring it back? We're noticed an uptick of people telling us they miss it. What say you, faithful Nursery Management reader? Drop me a note at the email below.
