Sugar plantations are water intensive and breeding grounds for malaria. The Illovo Sugar Group in Malawi has taken on the responsibility for funding and implementation of an integrated malaria management program, which includes the use of insecticides and education. Syngenta’s Vector Control, which is dedicated to preventing diseases like malaria through the control of insect vectors, has been involved in this effort. The formulation used in Syngenta’s Demand CS insecticide is also used in Syngenta Vector Control’s Icon 10CS insecticide for malaria prevention in Africa. For the past two years Syngenta Vector Control has been actively engaged with the Illovo sugar plantation near Blantyre, Malawi by helping them implement a program to prevent malaria.
