Plantpeddler hosted Variety Day 2026 on Aug. 7, a day the grower said was focused on "testing the best in the Midwest."
The annual event in Cresco, Iowa, highlighted over 1,500 varieties of vegetative annuals in large containers, hanging baskets and beds from a global array of breeders. Near-record attendance included breeders, sponsors, brokers, growers, garden center managers and industry professionals.
Along with the activities in the trial gardens, supporting sponsors also hosted a trade show. Presentations were given by Lisa Heredia from Danziger, Raymond Cloyd from Kansas State University, Caleb Wilson from Syngenta Professional Solutions and Morgan Terry and Rick Vulgamott from Smurfit Westrock.

At Variety Day, participants had the opportunity to vote for their favorite three varieties. Begonia Waterfall Encanto Pink, part of the 2027 Plantpeddler begonia program, came out on top.
This year’s Top 25 was a diverse genetic blend, with overall domination by hanging baskets selections at 19. Calibrachoa had the highest number of winners at seven. There were also several multiliners in the top 25. (See the full results in the chart below.)
Plantpeddler Poinsettia Variety Day 2026 is Dec. 3, and Plantpeddler Variety Day 2027 is Aug. 6. For more information, images, variety submittal or sponsorship opportunities, contact stacyb@plantpeddler.com.
