The U.S. Senate has confirmed Dr. Erica Schwartz as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), making her the agency's first permanent leader in nearly a year. Schwartz was confirmed Aug. 5 by a vote of 51-44.
A preventive medicine physician, Schwartz previously served as deputy surgeon general during President Donald Trump's first administration and has held senior medical leadership positions with the U.S. Coast Guard. She was nominated for the position in April following months of leadership turnover at the CDC.
During her Senate confirmation hearing in July, Schwartz pledged to lead the agency with transparency and scientific integrity while supporting the administration's public health priorities.
Schwartz assumes leadership as the CDC continues to respond to several significant public health issues, including the ongoing multistate Cyclospora outbreak linked to recalled iceberg lettuce.
