Stat of the Week: 53% of nurseries surveyed plan to grow more of this crop in 2026

Every year, Nursery Management magazine conducts critical market research and produces an annual State of the Industry Report based on the findings.

Our team surveyed growers across the United States to learn about the overall health of the industry. Our 2025 survey featured 134 of our most-engaged nurseries, with data on sales, profits, prices and more.

Does your nursery plan on producing more, the same or less of each of these crops in 2026 compared with 2025?

The largest percentage in the "more" category is container-grown perennials at 53%, and right behind that is container-grown shrubs at 47%. The largest percentage in the "less" category is field-grown shrubs at 23%, and tied for second is field-grown trees and tropicals/houseplants at 20%.

Overall, nurseries were planning to keep their productions the same in 2026, with the largest percentages in the "same" category. For those planning to switch things up, the data show that some nurseries are adding more container-grown crops while removing the field-grown crops.
