Common name: Blue false indigo. Description: This North American native grows 3-4 feet tall and wide in an upright habit. Newly emerging shoots produce violet-blue, lupine-like flowers. Foliage is blue-green. Although it may appear sparse when first planted, the clump flourishes within three years, when it reaches full size. Hardiness: USDA Hardiness Zones 3-9. Best traits: Drought tolerant once established, butterfly attractant, seldom damaged by deer browsing. In the landscape: Use as an anchor for the back of the border; in cottage gardens, native plant gardens and prairie or meadow gardens. Awards: 2010 Perennial Plant of the Year from Perennial Plant Association.
