Name: Pinus densiflora ‘Umbraculifera’
Common Name: Japanese red pine
Description: This evergreen features an umbrella-like crown. ‘Umbraculifera’ is a slow-growing dwarf cultivar that grows to 10-20 feet tall with a spread of 15-25 feet. Another enduring feature is its orange-red bark. Bright green needles that typically measure 3 or 4 inches long appear in bundles of two. It also prolifically produces oval to oblong cones that measure around 2 inches long.
Hardiness: USDA Hardiness Zones 3-7.
Culture: Grow in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates some light afternoon shade, particularly in hot summer climates.
