HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Dr. Stanton Cope, a well-known entomology expert and director of technical services at Rose Pest Solutions, was recently recognized in the 2025 Class of Huntington County Honors.
The Huntington County Honors observes “the achievements, work and service of those with ties to the community who have made a lasting impact on Huntington County,” Ind., according to the organization’s website. Cope was among nine individuals to earn this recognition, including a Marine who was on board the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Cope was recognized for his business and professional contributions. In its article honoring Cope, the Huntington County Honors said he “has built a career as one of the foremost authorities on medical entomology…”
Following Cope’s post-doctoral studies at UCLA, where he discovered a mosquito species that caused a malaria outbreak in San Diego, he was commissioned as a Navy lieutenant, pursuing a 23-year career in medical entomology in the military sector, according to the Huntington County Honors. Cope directed the Armed Forces Pest Management Board and earned 24 ribbons and medals, including the Defense Superior Service Medal, for his leadership, said the organization.
Cope retired from the Navy in 2012 and moved to work in the private sector. He served as the director of entomology and regulatory services at Terminix International and then as vice president of technical services at Atlantic Paste and Glue Company. In 2023, Cope took on the role of director of technical services at Rose Pest Solutions.
Cope has co-authored 80 scientific presentations, delivered over 150 presentations and taught many classes for schools and organizations. Cope is the technical editor of the Mallis Handbook of Pest Control, 11th Edition.
Cope is a 1972 graduate of Huntington North High School, known for his notable pitching on the baseball field and intelligence in the classroom, said the Huntington County Honors.
“From the ballfields of Huntington to the laboratories of UCLA, from the Pentagon to international research forums, Captain Stan ‘the Mosquito Man’ Cope has devoted his career to understanding — and teaching others about — a creature both feared and fascinating,” said the Huntington County Honors in its article about Cope. “His story is proof that even the smallest of subjects can lead to a life of global impact.”
