West Coast organic fertilizer manufacturer True Organic Products announced the launch of True Choke-Out Herbicide.

Registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency  and OMRI-listed, this burndown herbicide provides organic and conventional growers with a fast-acting solution to combat weeds and grasses, the company said in a news release.

“Our mission at True Organic has always been centered on purposeful innovation that supports farmers through every stage of the agricultural cycle,” said Jake Evans, owner and CEO of True Organic Products. “With True Choke-Out, we are expanding our commitment from the soil up. We’ve engineered an organic-compliant weed control tool that doesn't sacrifice the rapid efficacy and high-yield performance that commercial growers rely on.”

True Choke-Out features active ingredients like capric acid and caprylic acid, both derived from plant-based oils. Upon contact with broadleaf or grass weed species, the formulation begins drying up foliage within hours. With adequate spray deposition and concentration, a single application can achieve a total weed kill within two to three days, the company said.

Additional product highlights provided by the company include:

  • Fast-acting, non-selective weed control: It serves as a post-emergent, foliar herbicide that delivers highly effective, broad-spectrum control of both annual and perennial broadleaf weeds and grasses.
  • Non-systemic action: Because it is non-systemic and remains entirely on the plant surface, it does not travel within the plant tissue, allowing for more localized, contact-based control.
  • Safe for organic and crop use: It is specifically listed and allowed for use in organic production and can be applied in and around both food and non-food crop areas.
  • Versatile application across growing cycles: It can be used across multiple crop types (including field crops, leafy greens, grapes, tree nuts and fruiting vegetables), for broadcast pre-planting, post-harvest cleanups or as an in-season directed/shielded spray.
  • Non-volatile formulation: It is formulated as a non-volatile, emulsifiable concentrate, minimizing the risk of vapor drift onto nearby non-target crops.
  • Multi-functional agricultural aid: Beyond weed control, the formula is effective enough to serve as a reliable harvest aid, a crop desiccant (such as for legumes) and a tool for sucker control or lettuce thinning.
  • Easy application with standard equipment: The concentrate dilutes into various solution strengths (3%, 6% or 9%) and can be applied using standard ground equipment like boom sprays and smart sprayers.

True Organic evaluated TRUE Choke-Out over the course of three years to ensure its dependability in real-world scenarios.

Recent field trials in blueberries demonstrated Choke-Out's potential as a precision weed management tool. Led by True Organic's agronomy team, the trial evaluated targeted banded applications and multiple treatment timings, resulting in strong weed suppression while limiting applications to areas where control was needed most.

"After spraying Choke-Out at the highest labeled rate using poor-quality water with no water treatment, the results spoke for themselves. It worked. Choke-Out has definitely earned my attention and interest as a weed control solution," said Vern Johnson, owner and pest control adviser at Arizona Agricultural Solutions in Benson, Arizona.

TRUE Choke-Out Herbicide is available now for commercial agricultural use in select states (map available at the bottom of this page). The company’s agronomy experts help determine the right application rate and timing for True Choke-Out, which is available in 2.5-gallon jugs for 275-gallon bulk containers.
