Industry leaders call for action to support economic aid for specialty crops

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced up to $1 billion in bridge payments through the Assistance for Specialty Crop Farmers Program for specialty crops and sugar, but U.S. specialty crop organizations said more support is needed for the produce sector.

In a joint statement, the Specialty Crop Farm Bill Alliance co-chairs, including International Fresh Produce Association CEO Cathy Burns, renewed their call for Congress to provide no less than $5 billion in dedicated aid to ensure the long-term sustainability of the specialty crop sector.
